Supporting Information for Staff Nurse – Ward 46, Short Stay Medical Receiving

I am applying for this post because I believe I have the skills, values, and experience to deliver excellent patient care in a fast-paced acute hospital environment.

Why I am suitable

  • I am a registered nurse on the NMC register and have been on the register for more than 18 months, giving me the foundational experience required.

  • I have worked in acute settings before. In my previous roles I have cared for patients with varied medical conditions, responded to emergencies, monitored vital signs, administered medications, and assisted with treatments.

  • I have good communication skills. I can explain procedures clearly, listen to patients and families, and coordinate with other healthcare professionals (doctors, physiotherapists, pharmacists) to deliver care.

  • I work well under pressure. In busy wards, I can prioritise tasks, make quick decisions, and remain calm when things get difficult.

  • I show compassion and empathy. I treat patients with dignity, respect their concerns, and maintain their safety and privacy.

  • I am adaptable. I learn quickly, accept new methods or systems, and adjust to changes in patient mix, acuity, or ward routines.

  • I am a team player. I support colleagues, share knowledge, and contribute to a positive working culture.

What I would bring to Ward 46

  • Because Ward 46 has both short-stay medical and head injury patients, I believe my versatility is an asset. I am keen to deepen my knowledge in head injury care and acute medical nursing.

  • I would bring attention to detail. I always double check medication charts, monitor patients carefully, and promptly report changes.

  • I have a strong sense of responsibility and accountability. I understand that patient safety is paramount.

  • I strive for continuous learning. I would take opportunities offered (training, mentoring, audit) to improve my practice and contribute to ward improvements.

Example from experience

In my previous role on a medical ward:

  • A patient deteriorated suddenly overnight. I noticed change in oxygen saturation and level of consciousness. I alerted the medical team, assisted with interventions, observed closely, and documented changes. The prompt actions helped stabilise the patient.

  • I led the handover process at shift change, making sure all relevant patient information was handed over accurately and in a structured way, reducing errors or omissions.

  • I helped a new nurse settle in by mentoring them, explaining ward policies, role expectations, and offering guidance in the first weeks.

Conclusion

I believe I would make a strong contribution to Ward 46. I am committed to delivering excellent, compassionate care, working as part of the multidisciplinary team, and continuously developing. Thank you for considering my application.
